At a distance of 2 to 15 miles offshore in the northwest of the country from the Nicoya Peninsula, the "Catalina Islands" consists of about 20 'rocks' of different sizes. Catalina Islands diving is year round with water temperatures between 75 and 85° F, visibility about 18 to 75 feet and strong currents once in a while. For some reason - the mostly unexplored Catalina and nearby Bat Islands are a melting pot of very different undersea wildlife and fish that usually do not occur together. Huge schools of snappers, sharks, eagle mantas, turtles and barracudas are awaiting the diver as well as an immense variety of other tropical fish and reef wildlife. One of the giant turtle species can be met all year round. The huge Mantas Rays with wingspans of 14 to 20 feet are seen between November and May with up to 50 viewable on a single dive.
