Mauritius is a crowded island with heavy fishing activity and numerous shoreline developments that have both had their impact on the shallow coastal areas. That said, the island is still beautiful and the diving provides some wonderful sights. As in many other heavily fished areas though, large fish are rare and it is the small creatures that provide the spectacle. Much of the branching hard coral has been removed by the jewelry trade (just take a look in any jewelry shop on shore) so foliose and encrusting corals are the most common residents. To get a comparison of what the reefs would look like without this over exploitation one must travel further east to the island of Rodrigues.
