You think only tropical waters are suitable for diving? I think every natural body of water with visibility over half a meter and depth over one meter is quite an interesting place to discover. When diving in Estonia, my home country, the average visibility is 3-5 meters and water temperature is 10˚C. In the best days, numbers can reach accordingly 10 and 21. But diving can be still interesting. You just have to take your time and stop dreaming of Red Sea. One of my most interesting dives was in the depth of one and half meters and lasted for four hours. During that time I saw how a pike attacked his pray and I got a picture of it. In every dive you can see drama, tragedy or a love story. Just look at the right direction and be patient (that is why you need a dry suite in Estonia :))
The love for my home country does not mean that I do not know how good is diving in warm waters. My preferred destinations are around South-East Asia. I am sure this is the region you can discover till the end of your days.
Why am I taking pictures? As a professional photographer, this is my work on dry land. But being underwater gives me an emotion so strong that I just can not keep it to myself. So to share my impressions, I completed two exhibitions "Wet Eyes" - four years ago about tropical underwater wildlife and this year about Estonian waters. And to get the audience closer to my experience, I decided to put the pictures into the swimming pool, under the water.
When taking pictures, the question of light is crucial for me. You have to build it up and it has to look more or less natural and logical. It can not just be accidental, unless this is the aim. My standard underwater kit consists of Canon EOS 400D, Canon 10-20mm, Canon 60mm, Ikelite housing + 2 Ikelite strobes. When needed, then also Canon 14mm, Canon 24mm, Canon 200mm, underwater softboxes, snoots, tripods and additional 2 strobes.
