Utila Island Scuba Diving

Turtle Harbor Marine Reserve provides five dive sites that range from novice to professional. These sites offer canyons with 200-foot drops, giant barrel sponges, yellow-tailed snapper, and much more. There are swim-through caves, multiple overhangs, and sandy canyons. The caves have lots of chimneys, which let light into the caverns, and they are noted for diverse species of sponges, some of which are over 12 feet long. Turtle Harbor is by far the most popular place for a varied and enjoyable dive.

The most westerly site in Turtle Harbor is CJ's Dropoff, which is one of the most exciting dive sites offered in Turtle Harbor. This awesome fringing reef boasts depths ranging from 20 to 1,000 feet off the continental shelf. Hawksbill and loggerhead turtles are common, as are manta rays and huge barrel sponges along the wall. This is an adventurous dive that is unparalleled in the area with multilevel diving, abundant wildlife, and varied coral reefs.

The climate in Utila is mild and warm all year round; water temperatures are warm, ranging from mid to high 80's, and visibility is in the 50 to 100 foot range. The mild climate and clear waters support premium diving conditions and an impressive amount of sea life not found in colder areas.

Diving in Utila is a diverse and incredible experience for any skill level, and with numerous incredible dive sites, there is something exciting here for every diver on every visit. There is a number of excellent dive operators in Utila, many of whom have been operating for a number of years, and who have extensive knowledge on the local walls and reefs.
