Located on the north east coast of New Zealand's North Island, The Bay of Plenty was so named by Captain James Cook in the 18th century. Even today, the Bay of Plenty is a beautiful part of New Zealand, encompassing long stretches of sandy white beaches and calm, warm waters which are heated by the East Auckland Current.
The majority of the scuba diving in the Bay of Plenty tends to be focussed around the smaller islands which lie just offshore in the Bay. The volcanic nature of these islands very much shapes the underwater geography of the area, with divers able to see many of the hot water vents seeping out underwater.
The diving in the Bay of Plenty around these smaller islands, and with the warm temperatures and excellent visibility, there are a number of opportunities for some very good diving. The islands themselves and the dive sites surrounding them are normally accessed by the dive boats leaving from Whakatane and Tauranga. However, there is also some shore diving to be tried from further along the coast at Lottin Point.
