This little Archieplago in the South Pacific consists of over 300 islands with volcanic landmasses Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, comprising its two largest divisions. The capital, Suva, on Vitu Levu is where 75 percent of the total population (850,000 people) reside. Half of which are original Fijians and the rest mainly Indian, as well as the occasional foreigner from Europe, China and the surrounding Pacific Islands.
The name Fiji is derived from the original Tongan name for 'Islands'. The smaller islands are made of coral, making it a very popular for reef diving destination. Much of the area's diving potential remains unexplored, however the Somosomo Strait, Taveuni, Kadavu and Bligh Water are becoming well known spots.Fijian summer is between April and October, with a lush thirty degree clime to compliment a 23-27 degree year round water temperature vacllation.
Where to spot the 'locals' in Fiji
The Island's water visibility is best in winter and average diving depths reach around 40m. Pelagics, sharks, and various tropical fish play around the breathtaking coral reefs which earn Fiji the title of 'soft coral capital of the world'. Dolphins, manta and eagle rays, turtles, barracuda, trevally, cuttlefish, surgeonfish, fusiliers, antheas and flashlight fish abound.
