Southern Australia Scuba Diving

80 Dive Sites in 39 Destinations

South Australia is a temperate diving destination rich in marine life. Major destinations include Adelaide, Port Lincoln, Kangaroo Island, York Peninsula, Eyre Peninsula and a host of offshore reefs and islands.

The best times for diving in South Australia are the Summer and the Autumn months of December to May. Port Noarlunga is only 34 km (21 miles) south of Adelaide. A natural reef forms part of an aquatic reserve with depths ranging from 6 to 20 metres. The southern end of the reef is broken by a gap, and is accessible by a jetty running out to it. The jetty itself is quite an interesting dive in its own right. The area abounds with marine life and is worth a visit as either a day or night dive.

Port Willunga is a 40km (25 miles) south of Adelaide. Off the shore of Port Willunga lies the wreck of the 'Star Of Greece', an iron ship lost in 1888. Its skeletal remains rest in 6 metres of water. Very little marine life is present, but the wreck itself offers an interesting time.

Only 84km (52 miles) south of Adelaide is the beautiful seaside resort of Victor Harbor, providing a variety of diving options. Granite Island, connected to the mainland by a causeway has an interesting variety of marine life. A horse drawn tourist trolley located at the edge of the jetty saves carrying gear to the Island.

The suburban seaside resort of Glenelg is easily reached by train from Victoria Square in the city centre. The harbour shelters a number of yachts and boats which can be chartered for a dive.
