Located approximately 2,700 km (1,676 miles) north-west of Perth, Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the Indian Ocean comprise 27 coral islands forming 2 atolls. The islands are believed to have been discovered in 1609 by Captain William Keeling of the East India Company. The islands became an Australian Territory in 1955. Only two of the 27 islands, Home and West Islands, are inhabited.
The brilliant clear waters, white sandy beaches and balmy weather make Cocos (Keeling) Islands an ideal place for snorkeling, swimming and sunbathing. Access to the islands is from Perth operated by National Jet Systems. Flights depart from Perth International Airport and therefore some form of identification is needed. Cocos is surrounded by a fringing reef and is a classic atoll formation. The best reef dives are between Turk's Reef and Horsborough with superb table corals and excellent visibility. The coral reef is bounded on one side by a coral drop-off going down to 35 metres. The coral formations of the reef are in excellent condition as the reef is protected from the ocean's waves.
