Australia is one of the worlds premier diving destinations, with a variety of types of scuba diving available for all levels of experience. Dives sites are such as the 'SS Yongala' and Ningaloo reef are destinations that many divers rate within the top 10 in the world. Types of diving available in Australia include reef diving, wreck diving, diving with a variety of sharks and other marine life, viewing the kelp forests as well as some of the finest freshwater cave diving in the world.

Diving The Great Barrier Reef

However, the undoubted highlight of diving in the Australasia region is the Great Barrier Reef, the largest reef system to be found anywhere in the world. The Great Barrier Reef extends over 2,000 kilometres in length, and is located off the coast of Queensland in North East Australia. The reef itself is a collection of over 900 islands, and over 3,000 separate coral systems, and it houses over 400 types of coral, as well as 1,500 different varieties of fish. This variety of marine life is unparalleled anywhere else in the world today.

Such is the value of the Great Barrier Reef, that in 1981 it was official declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, and large parts of the reef are protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
