Description:
Abandoned Natural Iron Ore open mine pit. This mine pit wsa abandoned in the late 50's and all of the mobile equipment along with the converyor system and the crusher unit w/ the reject rock hopper were salvaged. This pit is a popular swim spot for locals and novice divers can enjoy the east side from shore. The west side is good as well but only access is by boat. Water clarity differs due to rain but normally the vis is very good. There is a rock wall on the east side that drops from about 60 ' to about 170' is some areas and the north end to about 130'. There is how ever a mining structure that requires the use of a boat that starts at 97' and drops to 145'. Its a great dive and the vis veries there also depending on how long it has been between hard rains since the north shore is a very high dirt back and sediment washes into the pit and craps up the vis during hard rains. At 145' the vis has been so good I could easily read a news paper and see nearly the surface. This pit offers good diving for novis to Advanced divers....as well as Tech divers since the pit has a max depth of 215'. The contour map of the pit says 225' but the silt on the bottom is some areas is about 10' deep. No worries though....most of the interesting stuff is not covered by the silt that thick.Submitted by: MNRick on 2010-07-19 | Views: 152 | Dive Site ID: 72357
