Whilst it may not be as warm as the Bahamas, or the visibility much that of areas such as Belize, diving within England is a thriving business. Most weekends will see increasing numbers of scuba divers taking themselves to either one of the inland lakes or quarries, or to one of the many coastal dives sites scattered around our shores.
The multitude of inland dive locations are normally disused quarries that have been flooded to provide diving opportunities for those who may not live near one of the coastal dive sites. Many of these quarries are affiliated to the local dive clubs, and it is in these local inland quarries that many people choose to learn to scuba dive, or to develop their existing skills.
Typically, the fish life in these quarries is limited, although it is possible you will encounter British freshwater fish such as the pike, perch or roach. The water temperatures in these inland quarries can range from between 2 degrees C up to 18 degrees C in the Summer, and as such a dry suit is generally required for the majority of inland diving in the UK. There are a number of these inland quarries based around England, and the best known include Stoney Cove, Vobster Quay, Gildenburgh, Wraysbury, Littleton Pit and Eight Acre Lake.
