Description:

Here lie two wrecks,one which is a 111 ton tugboat which was built in 1937 and which sank in December 1959 during a storm.All 17 crew members died.The second wreck has not been located but is said to be the remains of a wooden tugboat.Located 3.5 kilometers from the shore at Douro river mouth,the Batelao lies on a sandy sea bed at a depth of 27 meters,with lots of areas having collapsed.Inside the ship it is clear that cement was being transported as it set while in the water and now there are large chunks of set concrete inside the vessel.There are some strong currents here on occasion,but very good fish life
