Everyone knows that France is one of the world's leading tourist attractions, with landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame in Paris, but there are also several excellent sites for scuba diving in France.
Diving is not a new phenomenon to the French and in fact, scuba diving is deeply routed into France. Godfather of modern scuba diving Jacques-Yves Cousteau was a Frenchman who revolutionised the scuba diving world in the middle parts of the 20th century with his invention, The Aqua Lung. Though this is not the first time a Frenchman had an impact on scuba diving, in 1772 Sieur Freminet invented what was the world's first self-contained air device using recycled air from inside a barrel- unfortunately this device was heavily flawed due to the lack of understanding of the risks of scuba diving, he died after testing his invention underwater for 20 minutes.
The fact that the country borders on the Mediterranean means that it is home to a wide variety of sea creatures, exotic plants, coral reefs, underwater caverns and wrecks which make it an excellent spot for divers to visit and explore. In fact, divers from all over the world are now flocking to the area in order to see sunken ships from the World War II era. The South of France features a wide coastline from St Tropez to the Poqurelles which features several wrecks that divers can explore.
Western France has some sites of interest to divers as well, even if it does not feature the same number of wrecks. Instead, what can be found is a vast assortment of marine life which can easily be viewed through the crystal clear waters of the area. Pollack, tuna and mackerel are the most commonly found fish here and they are surrounded by beautiful coral reefs that are like a magnet to divers of all experience levels.
