Bordering with the east coast of Haiti is the Dominican Republic, a diverse country ranging from tropical rainforests through to arid, almost desert like areas. The majority of the tourists who come here, do so to enjoy the excellent beaches along the Dominican Republic's 870 miles of coastline. However, the Dominican Republic has some excellent diving on offer, and indeed scuba diving is becoming an increasingly popular pastime here.
The diving in the Dominican Republic tends to be concentrated in a few coastal areas such as Sosua and Playa Magenta in the north and Bayahibe, from where you can dive in the Parque Nacionale Del Este.
The Isla Catalina, or Catalina Island is a small developed island off the south coast, and is an area where scuba diving is very popular. Excellent wall diving is on offer, and there are a good number and variety of corals and sponges. For shark enthusiasts, there are good opportunities to spot black tips and Hammerheads who inhabit the waters surrounding Catalina Island.
