Lying 145 kilometres south of the Florida coast, Cuba is the largest of the group of islands known as the Antilles, and whilst Cuba may be synonymous with names like Fidel Castro and incidents such as the Bay of Pigs invasion, its diving offers some exceptional sites. Regions such as the Isla De La Juventud (Island of Youth), and the Jardines De La Reina have done much to increase the reputation of scuba diving in Cuba in recent times, and indeed the volumes of people coming to dive in Cuban waters is steadily on the increase.
Cuba has a reputation amongst divers as not really delivering on the larger pelagic marine life, and whilst this is not entirely undeserved (whale sharks pass through in November - December), it could well be said that the surplus other marine life more than compensates. The reefs around Cuba are estimated to house over 1,000 species of fish, with good numbers of marbled groupers and tarpons begin spotted on a regular basis. The actual reefs themselves also benefit from large amounts of coral and sponge life, with large Gorgonians also being a regular occupant of the Cuban reefs.
