Bonaire has been described as a scuba divers paradise, predominantly due to the pristine nature of the reefs surrounding the island. This has ensured that a large amount of the marine life has been under a protected marine park status for over 25 years. The reefs surrounding Bonaire are a marine park, and everyone who is looking to dive in Bonaire must attend an orientation held by the Bonaire Marine Park Authorities, which teaches them of the rules and regulations of diving in the marine park. This orientation costs $25, which goes towards to the upkeep of the park itself.

The scuba diving in Bonaire is typically Caribbean, with highly organised dive operators generally offering an exceptionally high quality of service. The reefs themselves completely encircle both Bonaire and Klein Bonaire, and are home to an exceptionally large variety of fish. These reefs tend to start very close to the shore, and slope down to a 'roof terrace'which extends out for a short distance at a depth of only 10 meters. This roof terrace is exceptionally narrow in the north of the island, but in the south of the island, it extends out to almost 200 metres. It is in this southern region of Bonaire that the majority of the dive sites are located.
