The Sulu Sea is in fact a small collection of islands located south west of the main Philippines Archipelago, and offers not only the best scuba diving in the Philippines, but arguably anywhere in the whole of Asia. The 'jewel in the crown' of the Sulu Seas, is the dive sites situated at the Tubbataha Reefs, a protected marine reserve, and a world heritage site which is protected by UNESCO. The reefs themselves are both classic atoll style lagoons, which are surrounded by sandbars and lagoons, and are separated by a 6 km (4 miles) channel between them. The protection offered by the location, and the legislation have undoubtedly gone a long way to protect the marine life within these waters, and there now exists a huge variety of marine life and corals, ranging from the very smallest fish to some of the true giants of the sea.

There remote location, almost 110 miles south east of Puerto Princessa in Pelawan means that access to the Tubbataha Reefs is by live aboard only, and this is restricted by the weather to only a couple of months a year. Outside of the March to June diving season, the Sulu Seas are inaccessible due to the rough waters.
