The Philippines lie within the 40,000 km horseshoe-shape of the Pacific Ring of Fire and its 452 volcanoes. Its people are no strangers to seismic activity and volcanic interruptions, sometimes as many as 20 quakes a day, but fortunately most of them are too weak to be felt.
The Philippines Archipelago lies in Southeast Asia and comprises a total of 7,107 islands an immense population of 88 million. Surrounded geographically by the Philippine, South China and Celebes Seas, the islands are divided into the following groups; Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, with Manila, the Philippine's capital on Luzon. Due to an amalgamation of currents from the Indian Ocean and above-mentioned seas, the Philippines diversity of marine life ranks among the richest in the world, sporting no less than 800 species of coral.
The climate is tropical with three distinct seasons. Tag-init is the summer season, March to May Tag-ulan is a rainy June to November and Taglamig is a colder December to February.
Filipino culture is a mixture of Hispanic and Austronesian ancestry, with the original tribal people resembling aborigines from 'down under'. They were followed later by a second large group of settlers from Malaysia. This group and those thereafter, such as the Chinese and Spanish influence are the ascendants of the present Filipino people.
