South Male Atoll Scuba Diving

The diving on South Male Atoll is categorised by the strong currents that rush between the various islands within the Atoll. These currents, or 'kandus', are channels were tidal water enters and leaves the atoll, and they are a typical characteristic of scuba diving in the Maldives. These kandus tend to be very rich in nutrients, and subsequently prove to entice some of the larger pelagics. In particular, Manta Rays and Whale Sharks are regularly sighted around these kandus throughout the Maldives, attracted by the steady flow of nutrients and plankton that are concentrated in the water around them.

Whilst these Kandus do provide a quite unique diving experience, it would be wrong to suggest that this is the mainstay of the diving in the Maldives, as it offers so much more than that. In fact, the sheer amount, and variety of scuba diving on offer in the Maldives ensure that both novice and experienced divers tend to leave fulfilled, vowing to return as soon as they can.

There are a number of excellent dive sites throughout South Male Atoll, including Cocoa Corner and the Kandooma Caves, which are amongst the largest caves in the Maldives. Arguably the most well known dive in South Male Atoll is Guraidhoo Atoll. Here experienced divers (strong currents) can enjoy being carried along by some of the powerful currents which frequent the area, whilst watching the marine life go by.

As with throughout the Maldives, South Male Atoll provides opportunities for some truly exceptional diving, and certainly make what can be a long trip worth while. In particular, the kandus that can be found throughout the area ensure a unique and exhilarating dive experience that is difficult to replicate elsewhere.
