A part of the world's largest archipelago, the scuba diving in Sumatra has long sat in the shadows of Indonesia's better known dive destinations such as Komodo and Sulawesi. However, as with most destinations in Indonesia, excellent diving can be found by a small amount of research, and a more 'flexible' approach to journey times.
Whilst Sumatra is particularly well known for destinations such as Lake Toba, or the world class surfing to be found in Nias, Aceh and in particular the island of Pulau Weh offer some superb scuba diving. For those people intending to visit Sumatra, a few days spent at the dive sites around Pulau Weh could certainly be considered time well spent.
