Pulau Weh Scuba Diving

Here at Indonesia's most north-western island, the currents of the Andaman Sea and the Indian Ocean merge, bringing with them the rich nutrients which are the primary food source of so much of the regions prolific and diverse marine life.

The dive sites in Pulau Weh are predominantly focused around the more sheltered waters on the north-west coast of the island, and although there are a small number of dive sites scattered around the eastern and southern coast it is likely you will spend the majority of your diving time in the north.

There are a number of excellent dive sites in Pulau Weh, including The Canyon and the WW2 wreck of the Sophie Rickmers, however it is the large pinnacle at Batee Tokong which is considered to offer the best diving on the island. Plummeting from just above the water to over 50 metres below, this huge pinnacle is densely covered in a spectacular array of hard corals, sea fans and numerous species of colour reef fish.

The rich currents which sweep up to Batee Tokong ensure that there is always a good amount of pelagic activity at the site, as well as the resident populations of trevallies, snappers and unicornfish. Batee Tokong is also renowned as being home to an incredible number of moray eels, and Honeycomb, Giant, Blotched and Yellow Eyed moray eels can all be found here.

Diving is possible in Pulau Weh throughout the year, and water temperature is a fairly comfortable 28 - 30 degrees Celsius. Visibility throughout the region averages between 20 - 25 metres.
