Indonesia Scuba Diving

343 Dive Sites in 12 Destinations

You'll spend several lifetimes attempting to dive the entire Republic of Indonesia - that's if you can choose where to start among its 17,508 islands. Indonesia had been globally notorious for its seismic activity, even before the disastrous 2004 Tsunami in northern Sumatra. This is due to its geographical placement upon the edge of the Pacific, Eurasian, and Australian tectonic plates.

Indonesia has an average of 150 active volcanoes, among them formidable Krakatoa and Tambora. When the Toba supervolcano erupted 70,000 years ago it caused a catastrophe of global proportion. Ironically, the role this volcanic ash plays in producing some of the world's most fertile soil has been a critical element in agriculturally sustaining Indonesia's ever-growing population of over 234 million people.

The name Indonesia is the Latin and Greek hybrid of 'Indus' - India and 'nesos' - island. Early settlements date back to the Homo erectus fossil or "Java Man" who dates back to between 2 million and 500,000 years ago. The country shares land borders with Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines with Jakarta as its capital. Java, Kalimantan, Sumatra, and Sulawesi form part of the larger islands in the group.
