Warmed by the Agulhas Current, the waters off the coast of KwaZulu-Natal have some truly fantastic diving in conditions which are perfect for those wishing to scuba dive in some of the most exciting dive sites off the coast of Africa. Relatively undiscovered until about a decade ago, recent years have seen a surge in popularity in diving through this area, and nowadays Kwazulu-Natal has a reputation which is growing amongst divers by the day. Within the Kwazulu-Natal region, there are three main locations for scuba diving, the beautiful reefs of Sodwana Bay, Aliwal Shoals, and Protea Banks.

Sodwana Bay Diving

Sodwana Bay is considered by many to be the best spot for diving in South Africa, and it's not difficult to see why. Located approximately four hours drive north of Durban, Sodwana Bay is now part of the *Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, and is protected as a world heritage site. Large amounts of coral and huge numbers of reef fish inhabit the area around Sodwana, and depending on the time of year, there is also the opportunity to spot whales here (Humpback and Southern Right), Whale Sharks and Dolphins. If you are considering diving in Sodwana Bay, it is also worth taking time out to visit the superb game reserves that are close by, as well as exploring the rest of the St Lucia Park area.
