"You gather the idea that Mauritius was made first and then heaven, and that heaven was copied after Mauritius"... Mark Twain
This sub tropical Island was once home to the dim-witted (yet famed) Dodo, a species of bird that managed eradicate itself entirely by 1681 at the hands of the Portuguese settlers who found Mauritius. There are a few unconfirmed theories as to exactly how this occurred, yet not many a dim-wit has succeeded in immortalizing itself the way the Dodo has. The bird still manages to live on, somehow quietly eluding Darwin's theory in its own unique way, whether on Mauritius's Coat of Arms or at the discussion forefront of all famed extinctions - as well as many a cartoon (to name but a few).
Originally occupied buy the French, the Island's 1.2 million people consists of large immigrant populations from Madagascar, Great Britain, France and China, and joins Reunion (200km SW) and Rodrigues (570km NE) in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Southern Africa.
