Located along the coast of the Red Sea, Safaga is a town located just half an hour from Hurghada. Safaga is a popular tourist destination with an active marine port which acts as a regular stop to many cruise services. It is often used as the starting point for those taking part in the trips out into the Eastern Desert. It is well known for the phosphate mines and the ability to view the granite quarries which are located only an hour or two away.
While Safaga is known for it's remote sense of location, being surrounded primarily by black sand dunes and open waters, there is a decent amount of accommodation for tourists, primarily consisting of small rest houses and bungalows.
Scuba Diving in Safaga
Scuba diving in Safaga is excellent, there are over 35 dive sites located around this small town. With that said, as with many locations in Egypt, some divers would opt for less known locations as the dive sites can be quite busy at times given that scuba diving is a large tourism feature in Safaga. The marine life in Safaga is much like the other parts of the Red Sea, thriving. Corals populate almost all of the dives.
For those willing to brave the sometimes busy waters and tourist feeling there is a lot to offer in the waters. The most popular dive sites in Safaga are probably the Salem Express, Tobia Soraya, Sha Ab Quais and Sharm El Naga.
