Marsa Alam Scuba Diving

Elphinstone Reef is without doubt the most well known of the dive sites in Marsa Alam. Located just north of Marsa Alam and approximately 10 kilometres offshore, Elphinstone Reef is a long reef which runs north to south with steep walls on both its east and west sides. The deeper plateau to be found at the southern end of Elphinstone Reef is home to a large underwater arch, where legend suggests that the sarcophagus of an unknown pharaoh can be found. The plateau at the northern end of Elphinstone Reef is far shallower, and offers an excellent snorkelling opportunity. Coral cover throughout the reef is prolific and there are regular sightings of both hammerheads and oceanic whitetips throughout the area.

The dive site at Dolphin Reef is a large reef where a large wall gives way to a large sandy slope. Best known for the large pod of resident dolphins that are regularly found here, the reef is also home to a wide variety of reef fish including Angelfish and Butterflyfish.

Due to the longer distance from Marsa Alam of a number of the major dive sites, the resort has become home to a large liveaboard industry. Today numerous Red Sea liveaboards operate throughout the southern Red Sea region from Marsa Alam, offering access to the further afield dive sites including The Brothers, Geziret Zabargad and Daedalus Reef.
