Sardine Run
The water boils silver as predators feast on millions of migrating sardines during this unpredictable but unforgettable feeding frenzy off the South African coast. Divers, TV crews and fishermen assemble in the hope of joining the sharks at the party. This is a 10-day package including accommodation & dives.
The "Sardine Run" can happen anytime between mid-May and mid-July. Huge schools of fish migrate from the Agulhas Banks to the South African coast, bringing dolphins, whales, game fish, sharks and flocks of diving birds in their wake. This feeding frenzy is an amazing sight from the shore, better from a boat on the water, and best from underwater. Luckily for visitors, the dive companies situated along the south coast will do anything to help you get out there and experience the sardine run to the full (for a price, of course).
If diving's not your style, stay on the shore and watch the water bubbling with life. As the silver waves withdraw, they leave stranded, gasping fish and the locals run forward with buckets, nets, T-shirts, cooler boxes and anything else to hold their bounty. If you have a rod to hand the fishing is brilliant, and you have all the bait you'll ever need at your feet!
