Unsolved Mysteries of the Deep
There are many more mysteries in the deep, blue sea than we can possibly fathom - but of all the mysteries here are just a few.
The Bermuda Triangle
|
Also know as The Devil's Triangle – This is an area of the Atlantic Ocean stretching over 189,518 sq. miles between Melbourne, FL, Puerto Rico, Bermuda and back to Florida, where there have been thousands of disappearances of boats, planes and people. Each time this has happened there has been no evidence of a distress signal but scientists studying this phenomena, have not found anything to explain this mystery. It is believed by many that it is a supernatural force that is beyond our understanding which is responsible for over 1,000 sea and airmen disappearing. Some people still refuse to enter the region for fear that they will be the next unexplained disappearance.
Japan's Underwater Pyramid
Found near the Ryukyu Islands in Japan, a stone formation that resembles a pyramid has the academic community arguing over whether it was man-made and possibly an Asian version of Atlantis, or whether it is a natural occurrence whereby sandstone has cracked and broken along fault lines to produce a structure that resembles something built by man.
Lost City of Atlantis
|
For many thousands of years there has been a search for a city that sank into the sea. From the time of Plato, when the lost city of Atlantis was mentioned there have been arguments about whether it ever existed and groups of researchers who have offered up evidence as to the location and veracity of it's existence. But to this day no-one has been able to offer conclusive proof one way or the other. Atlantis has been considered as the cradle of civilization and as such an area of great importance. Perhaps one day we will know the truth of this.
Disappearance of the Maya
In Belize, a small country sandwiched between Mexico and Guatemala and originally owned by the British, is a cave system, where the world famous diving site, the Blue Hole, is found. Mayans believed the entrances to caves were the portal to the Netherworld. Here you can swim into the Cave of the Crystal Maiden, a young woman who is thought to have been sacrificed to the goddess of fertility and whose bones still lie there, encrusted with crystals of calcium carbonate that sparkle like shards of glass. But no-one knows what happened to the Mayan nation. From as long ago as one thousand years until the 17th century, the Maya ruled over a large area that included the Yucatan, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and parts of El Salvador - and then they disappeared. There have been many theories offered up as to what happened to this nation, yet there has been no conclusive proof and the mystery still remains.
Sea Turtles
|
Where do they spend the first years of their life? - These creatures have been around for eons and in the last few decades have been studied repeatedly by scientists, so you would assume that by now we could answer that question. Yet, like Mother Nature herself, there are still mysteries surrounding these beautiful and beloved turtles. If everything we knew about the sea turtles was added up it would be overshadowed by what we don't yet know. Their numbers have declined dramatically and the desire to preserve these amazing marine creatures is what leads us to try and discover the answer to where they spend their initial years as this is when they are at their most vulnerable.
