As many as three holiday resorts are believed to have burned down overnight in Ponta do Ouro, in Mozambique. The three resorts are reported to be scuba diving resorts Simply Scuba, The Whaler and Dolphin Encountours.

The incident began during the night when one of the visitors to the resort accidentally knocked over a candle while she was sleeping. Another visitor, residing at Dolphin Encountours was awoken in the early hours of Sunday morning when he heard a noise, he then went to investigate and witnessed a women running out of her bungalow, claiming she had knocked her candle over, after which she fled the scene. No one was killed or injured during the incident.

Attempts were made to try to spot the fire from spreading, as people ran around with fire extinguishers doing what they could to help. Due to the wind present at the time as well as the height of the flames, attempts were unsuccessful, as the fire spread to the neighbouring dive resorts.

These were high profile dive centers which were popular stops for many divers who have dived in Mozambique.

The dive centers put their customers first as they evacuated everyone from their bungalows, only to be left with no time to save their businesses. The dive centers were completely destroyed during the fire. As diving trainer from South Africa, Shane Coomans said, "It is the end of an era".

The diving community's thoughts are with all those involved in the running of these dive centers, and wish you all a speedy restoration.
