For several reasons, marine conservation is becoming an increasingly important part of the scuba diving experience. This topic deals primarily with managing the many different types of underwater species and their ecosystems in order to prevent harm and even extinction from occurring. The delicate balance and biodiversity that is held in these ecosystems is crucial to preserving the species, populations, and habitats within. In the past, and still even today, this is something that goes by largely ignored which is very dangerous for our sea life.

The following will provide you with some important things that you as a diver can do to promote marine conservation. If you are someone who enjoys scuba diving, it is of utmost importance that you never feed or touch the wildlife under water. This is an essential step to marine conservation as the act of simply touching or feeding these creatures can actually decrease their chances for survival. It is hard to imagine how delicate these ecosystems are and by upsetting them you could be running an animal’s chance for survival. Even though you may wish to pet an animal to show it affection, you could be causing it stress and disturbing its natural protection methods. Picking them up and moving them can be an even greater risk.

Another related issue that you can do a lot to support as a scuba diver is reef conservation. Plankton and algae are an essential part of the underwater ecosystem as they provide food to so many of its organisms. They are also an essential part of the reefs themselves and are actually what give them their color. While many natural events that we do not have a part in can affect the reefs negatively, there is a lot that man does that can have a negative impact. It is important that we do our best to control our pollution which is an excellent first step to reef conservation.

Marine conservation can be difficult to achieve once damage has already been done because any efforts to help one species in particular can in turn have a negative effect on other species or on the ecosystem as a whole. However, these recovery efforts can be successful when the proper management strategies for all species can be created. These take into consideration all the positive and negative interactions between the different species in order to maintain the ecosystem’s natural genetic diversity. These restoration efforts are primarily aimed at returning these ecosystems to their natural condition. These rescue efforts, no matter how successful, will not be necessary however when individuals, especially those in the scuba diving industry begin to take marine conservation seriously. You can do your part today by spreading the word about the importance of these endeavors and always doing your best to respect the underwater ecosystems that you will be visiting when diving.
